A ‘must see’ for all garden lovers

If you are a garden lover, particularly of modern garden design, our unique Millennium Garden is a ‘must see’.  Designed by world-renowned plantsman, Piet Oudolf, it is now at it’s peak in late July/early August but continues to look at its best until mid-September.

The Millennium Garden is the first garden in the UK Piet designed which was open to the public and, for a number of years, the largest established garden he had designed. It is therefore an important example of his work. Originally designed and created by Piet back in 1997, we invited him to return to redesign the garden in 2008 and oversee the replanting in 2009, which was eventually finished in early 2010.

The bulk of the garden is planted with Perennials, most of which needed dividing after 3-4 years. The Millennium Garden was in its ninth year when Piet came to redesign it and was beginning to show signs of overcrowding with some of the original plants lost altogether.

Piet Oudolf is a native of Holland and originally studied to be an architect. Instead of designing buildings he became the founder of’ New Wave’ planting, a movement which takes inspiration from nature but employs artistic skill in creating planting schemes. As a plantsman, his aim is to emphasise the form, texture, and natural harmony of plants, and as a skilled plant breeder, he creates new varieties for these and other specific design purposes. His style is the result of the influence of various horticultural traditions such as the combination of Dutch formality and naturalistic planting styles.

Over the past 30 years, Piet has designed numerous residential gardens and small parks in the Netherlands, England, Germany, Sweden and the United States.

Come and see for yourself what a beautiful sight this garden is and take in the tranquil, colourful surroundings that make this such a special garden for Norfolk.
