Fantastic Sunset

Friday, 5th February 2010

This photo was taken in the last Thursday in January.  The sky provided a very dramatic show as the sun sunk down beyond the lakes.

Winter Sunshine

Winter Sunshine

Tuesday, 26th January 2010

Enjoy a refreshing winter walk around the reserve.  The lakes are looking stunning in the winter sunshine, make the most of the superb views through the trees, the snow has pushed the undergrowth down and everywhere is looking spacious and fresh.  The snow drops have pushed through in the wave garden, and sparrow song fills the air.

Habitat Garden update

Habitat Garden update

Tuesday, 26th January 2010

Our garden volunteers have tidied up the Habitat Garden ready for the early spring bulbs, Dwarf Iris, Chionodoxia and Alliums to emerge.  These should provide some early pollen and nectar for the gardens insect dwellers.  All the debris (apart from the weeds) is recycled within the garden either as a habitat pile or in the composting area.

Bittern Sighted

Bittern Sighted

Tuesday, 5th January 2010

A Bittern is being regularly sighted between the Wave Garden and Wader Scrape.

The Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) is a red listed species - one of the most threatened in the UK.   It is estimated there are only 50 - 150 that winter in the UK.  See if you can be one of the lucky ones to get a glimpse at this fantastic bird here at Pensthorpe.
