Manager - Zoo & Conservation Operations; Norfolk

A unique opportunity to work at the stunning location of Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, host of BBC‘s Springwatch, located in North Norfolk - in this newly created role.

Pensthorpe spans the River Wensum, a Special Area for Conservation (SAC), and is home to a wide collection of captive species as well as being a Mecca for migratory and native wildlife.  Pensthorpe Conservation Trust is part of national breeding and reintroduction program for corncrakes, cranes and red squirrels.

This is a senior level, hands on, role providing leadership of the species conservation team at Pensthorpe, particularly in relation to: the management, housing & exhibition, interpretation, husbandry of animals, the education of visitors, and compliance and administration associated with industry best practice and zoo licensing regulations.  The role will also benefit from advice and guidance from the Head of Species Management.  The role encompasses oversight of the conservation land management team at Pensthorpe and will involve a close working relationship with the Senior Warden.

The post will report to the General Manager and, ultimately, share a Duty Manager role to ensure day-to-day operations run smoothly.  A significant proportion of the job is outdoors and will be undertaken in all weathers and out of typical working hours, as animal welfare considerations are paramount.  The position is ideally suited to someone with a zoological background but with a passion for wildlife.

Knowledge and Experience

  • At least 7 years experience in the exhibition of animals, captive breeding and zoo animal husbandry
  • Demonstrable knowledge of conservation issues
  • Demonstrable experience of the zoo/captive breeding environment and the keeping of appropriate records, preferably including ARKS and ZIMS records software.
  • Formal qualifications or extensive experience in zoo keeping or conservation breeding

Personal Qualities

  • Ability to lead a small dedicated team.
  • Dedication to the exhibition, breeding and rearing of animals in captivity.
  • Ability to act on your own initiative and to work out of typical hours, as required.
  • Good communication and cooperation skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on evolving duties as the job requires.
  • Reliability and capacity for hard work
  • Ability to handle work of a confidential nature and exercise discretion amongst colleagues.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritise workload effectively.

A competitive salary will be offered depending on experience.

Closing date for applications:  Friday March 26th 2010

Interviews: April 2010

Post will commence: Summer 2010 (or earlier by mutual agreement)

Summer Internship Corncrake breeding; Norfolk

A unique opportunity to work at the stunning location of Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, host of BBC‘s Springwatch, located in North Norfolk.

Pensthorpe spans the River Wensum, a Special Area for Conservation (SAC), and is home to a wide collection of captive species as well as being a Mecca for migratory and native wildlife.  Pensthorpe Conservation Trust is part of national breeding and reintroduction programs for corncrakes, cranes and red squirrels.

The Corncrake is a bird species that has declined in the wild, as a result of the conflict between its ecological requirements and our modern way of life, and Pensthorpe is proud to be part of the Nene Washes Corncrake Project in partnership with RSPB, Natural England and the Zoological Society of London.  This is a fantastic opportunity to gain unique experience working with the conservation team at Pensthorpe.  It is a hands on role, where dedication and commitment are paramount in relation to: the husbandry needs, feeding, breeding & rearing, health care of the animals, and compliance and administration associated with industry best practice and zoo licensing regulations.

The post will report to the Head of Species Management and be for a fixed term period of six months (April-September).  The role requires that you live on site, with suitable accommodation being provided, as this is our busiest time of year and assisting with the rearing of young animals means a willingness to work long hours.  A significant proportion of the job is outdoors and will be undertaken in all weathers and out of typical working hours, as animal welfare considerations are paramount.  The position is ideally suited to someone looking to enhance their CV and with a passion for wildlife.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Interest and experience in captive breeding and animal husbandry
  • Knowledge of conservation issues
  • Demonstrable experience of a formal working environment.

Personal Qualities

  • Dedication to the breeding and rearing of animals in captivity.
  • Ability to act on your own initiative as required
  • Good communication skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to take instruction and correction.
  • Reliability and the capacity for hard work
