The Reserve is regionally recognised as a breeding site for many species that are of limited distribution in the UK, including Little Ringed Plover, Sandmartin, and Marsh Harrier. Pensthorpe also attracts Avocets, Redshank, Greenshank, Lapwings and Bittern, as well as a wealth of warbler species and other Summer migrants.
Visitors can support our conservation work and education programmes by adopting species such as Cranes, Black-necked Swans, Marabou Storks, Greater Flamingos and Red Squirrels. An adoption form can be downloaded here.
The Pensthorpe Conservation Trust (www.pensthorpetrust.org.uk) is a registered Charity based at Pensthorpe. The Trust breeds Corncrakes, eight species of crane, Lapwing, Redshank, Scaly-sided Merganser and Turtle Dove. The Trust plays a key role in several captive rearing and release programmes, working closely with the RSPB, and other bodies such as Natural England, the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust, and the Zoological Society of London.
