Pensthorpe Explorer

All aboard the Pensthorpe Explorer

The Pensthorpe Explorer normally runs between April and October however, unfortunately, it will not run until Government restrictions allow.

Enjoy an ‘off-road’ adventure on the Pensthorpe Explorer and travel around the reserve in a Land Rover trailer, visiting some of the more remote areas of the Estate which are not accessible on foot. Learn about different projects and farming practices at the reserve, and discover the history of the Pensthorpe Estate, while keeping your eyes peeled for unrivalled opportunities to spot some of the wildlife that calls Pensthorpe home.

Your journey begins with our knowledgeable guide giving an overview of Pensthorpe and some of the history of the area.  You’ll also hear about the inspiring work that Pensthorpe Conservation Trust is doing with corncrakes, turtle doves, red squirrels and Eurasian cranes.

Then it’s time to hop on the Land Rover to discover about the farm and its cattle, the Spinney, the site of the medieval village of Pensthorpe, which was hit badly by Black Death in 1395 and journey through the woodland areas to see if you can spot some deer.

Listen out for skylarks; see the ‘Beetle Bank’; discover the huge variety of flora that grows here; learn about Tundra 10,000 years ago, and find out what happens to some of the barley grown at Pensthorpe.

Get your binoculars out for beautiful views across the Wader Scrape and down the valley, discover about the oats that go into Jordan’s delicious cereals, learn about the importance of hedges and find out about the old railway line.

Plus, learn about the importance of the Wensum River, pass close by the Wader Scrape, water-meadows, wildflower meadows and look out for lizards by Starmoor Lake before seeing the hedgehog box, pingo ponds, osprey platform, badger sett and learning about the ancient woodland in Starmoor Woods. And lots more!

And, it’s not just for adults. It’s ideal for when little legs are tired, providing an engaging and inspiring insight into the world of nature and conservation. Children also get a Pensthorpe Explorer Spotter Booklet to fill in and a special badge – just ask your guide!

Make sure you book your seat on arrival as spaces are limited to twenty-eight per tour. The tour lasts approximately one hour.
